Odisha Patita Udhara Samiti (OPUS) is a non-voluntary organization that has been working tirelessly for the welfare of marginalized communities since 1999, or even earlier. OPUS holds the distinction of being the first organization in the state to focus on the rights and rehabilitation of sex workers—at a time when society had pushed them into the shadows of stigma and neglect.
During an era when the destiny of a male child born to a sex worker was often to run a brothel, and a female child was fated to follow the same path as her mother, OPUS dared to break the cycle. We stood by them, fought for their dignity, and worked relentlessly to restore their right to live with respect and purpose.
We took a bold step by appealing before the Hon’ble High Court with the plea that a child should be granted admission to school even if the father’s name is not mentioned. This landmark intervention led to a significant change—children of female sex workers could finally access education without discrimination or denial.
Our efforts didn’t stop there. We facilitated the enrollment of these individuals in vital government identity schemes—voter cards, ration cards, and more—ensuring they received the rights and benefits every citizen deserves.
One of our greatest milestones was putting an end to the entry of minor girls into the trade—a breakthrough in safeguarding their childhood and future. To this day, we continue our unwavering commitment to the welfare, dignity, and empowerment of these marginalized communities.
